A startup called Memphis Meats recently got investment of $17M from Bill Gates and Richard Branson. The company produces meat at its lab by the technique called proliferation. The cells taken from the animal is treated by protein that promotes tissue growth .The meat thus produced is termed as cultured meat.
The cultured meat could hit the supermarket shelf within 5 years . “The world loves to eat meat, and it is core to many of our cultures and traditions,” said Memphis Meats co-founder and CEO Uma Valeti in a press release . “Meat demand is growing rapidly around the world. We want the world to keep eating what it loves. However, the way conventional meat is produced today creates challenges for the environment, animal welfare and human health.”
The worlds first lab grown burger was introduced and eaten in a press conference in London by the scientists of Maastricht University on August 16,2013.
It is claimed that if the condition is ideal 2 months of cultured meat could deliver up to 50,000 tons of meat from ten pork muscle cells.
